Job Summary
The Scientific Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute at the University of Utah invites applications for one or more full-time (1.0 FTE) post-doctoral researchers to engage in the research, design, and deployment of machine learning and statistical methods to solve image analysis problems driven from applications in medicine, science, and engineering. The SCI Institute is seeking a highly talented and committed individuals with a demonstrated ability to work well with minimal supervision in a multi-disciplinary research environment. Successful candidates will enjoy being part of a world-renowned research institute and working closely with graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, software developers/engineers, research scientists, and faculty members to develop cutting-edge computational and mathematical tools.
 
Successful candidates will contribute to the Institute’s world-class research and software development in biomedical image analysis. The SCI Institute
The Scientific Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute at the University of Utah is an internationally recognized leader in visualization, scientific computing, and image analysis applied to a broad range of domains. The SCI Institute brings together faculty in bioengineering, computer science, mathematics, and electrical engineering in applying advanced computing technologies to challenges in a variety of domains, including biology and medicine. The SCI Institute includes 19 faculty members and over 200 other scientists, administrative support staff, and graduate and undergraduate students.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities
-          Research, formulate, implement, and apply advanced machine learning, data science, and image analysis for multiple biomedical applications in a collaborative scientific environment.
-          Participate with SCI faculties, external collaborators, and researchers in designing computational methods for application-driven research in image analysis that enable answering domain-specific research questions.
-          Propose and implement advanced image analysis and machine learning methodologies.
-          Implement, test, and evaluate computational methods within collaborative code bases.
-          Document methods and results in technical reports and peer-reviewed publications.
-          Contribute to grant proposal writing and relevant preliminary data preparation to accomplish the goals of the principal investigator research program.
-          Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests.
-          Scientific interaction among SCI faculties, application domain experts, software engineers, and graduate students.
-          Provide scientific support and mentoring for graduate students.
 
Qualifications 
-          Ph.D. in computer science or a closely related field awarded at time of the hire date.
-          Individuals having a proven track record of research in one or more of the following areas are highly preferred: image analysis, computer vision, data science (e.g., machine/deep learning, probabilistic modeling), uncertainty quantification, scientific visualization, applied mathematics, or computational sciences.
-          Ability and desire to learn cross-disciplinary knowledge to identify novel and impactful applications of image analysis and machine learning.
-          Analytical problem-solving and decision-making skills needed to independently propose solutions for identified problems.

Technical Skills
-          Advanced programming skills in C++ and scripting languages (e.g., Python and Matlab)
-          Hands on experience in developing and applying advanced machine learning methods and computational algorithms using modern software libraries, including PyTorch and TensorFlow.
-       Competence in git and GitHub is a must. 
-       Debugging and critical thinking skills including identifying bottlenecks, and bugs and devise solutions to these problems.
 
Desirable Skills
-          Experience with large software development projects is a plus.
-          Solid computer science fundamentals including algorithms, data structures, and object-oriented programming.
-          Solid experience with software development including designing, building, and maintaining efficient, reusable, and reliable source code.
 
Helpful Skills
-          Experience with high-performance computing, GPU/ parallel programming, and cloud computing.
-          Hands on experience with the Insight Toolkit (ITK), the Visualization Toolkit (VTK), and QT.
-          Experience with developing cross-platform software packages, or a willingness to learn. 
-          Good understanding of GitHub Actions, or a willingness to learn.  
-          Experience with Google Test (for developing unit tests), or a willingness to learn. 
 
Non-Technical Skills
-       Able to work independently and professionally with minimal supervision and direction.
-       Being self-motivated and having good organizational, communication, and teamwork skills is essential.
